We've done the research for the State of South Carolina. Here are the per linear foot cost for materials, and South Carolina deck railings codes as well as height requirements.
FAQS ABOUT RAILINGS:
Deck railing code (South Carolina) — what homeowners need to know
In residential code language, a “deck railing” is usually a guard (fall protection). A handrail is for stairs and must be graspable—these are different requirements.
When a guard is required (the big one):
-
A guard is required on open sides of decks/walking surfaces when the drop is more than 30 inches to grade below (measured within 36 inches of the edge).
Typical residential guard height:
-
Minimum 36 inches above the deck walking surface (residential).
Baluster/picket spacing:
-
Openings generally must not allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through.
Deck railing height requirements
For most homeowners, the “height requirement” depends on whether you’re talking about:
A) Deck edge guard (flat deck perimeter)
-
36" minimum height (typical residential).
B) Stair handrail (the graspable rail you hold)
-
Handrail is commonly required when there are more than 4 risers/steps.
-
Handrail height is typically 34"–38" above the stair nosings.
Important: Some situations (multi-family/commercial) use 42" guards—but that’s usually not single-family residential.
Is my deck railing safe? (simple homeowner checklist)
Homeowners typically decide a railing is “unsafe” when any of these are true:
-
It moves when you lean on it (wobble/rack).
-
Posts feel loose at the base or fasteners are pulling out.
-
Wood is rotting/splitting (especially at post bottoms, rim areas).
-
Guard openings look wide enough that a small child could slip through (often a spacing issue—4" rule is the common benchmark).
-
The deck is elevated ~30"+ and there’s no guard at all (major fall risk).
If your railing moves when you lean on it, it’s not just annoying—it can be a safety issue.
Do I need to replace my deck railing?
In many cases, yes—and often you can replace just the railings without rebuilding the entire deck if the framing is sound (this is a common and very effective “fear-reducer” message).
Replacement is typically recommended when:
-
The railing is loose/unstable.
-
Posts are compromised.
-
It doesn’t meet basic guard requirements (height/spacing) for the deck’s elevation.
Many homeowners don’t need a whole new deck—often we can replace the railings and make it safe and beautiful again.
